2015 Art Contest Winners

atp 2015 art contest

2015 has come and gone, so thus ends our art contest. I hope everyone’s 2016 is even better than the previous year! 😀

Well, I guess we should get right to it, huh? If your a bit confused about the title, check out the art contest we started a while ago. 😉

Without further ado… first place goes to… Treesareredinautum!

2015 - Treesareredinautumn

Wow, this piece was just plain beautiful. The colors and shading really work well together and the detail in each island is amazing. The sunset draws you in and the depiction of Betty Jetty on the rooftop is great. I also took into consideration that this piece was still a work in progress.

Anyway, great job! I will contact you about your prize. 😉

*Ahem* Second place goes to… Maroon Cheetah!

2015 - Maroon Cheetah

Okay, this was just so cute! It’s very simplistic, but still well done. What can I say? I’m a sucker for some chibi art. Plus, it showed a great celebration of the New Year!

Great job! I will talk to Silver Wolf and one of us will contact you about your prize.

Finally, third place goes to… Ultimate iPad Expert!

2015 - UiPE 1

This may be a graphic and not a drawing, but it’s still great art! The whole point of this site is Adventure Time and Poptropica, right? Well this picture is a great mash-up logo of the two! It’s high quality and overall really well put together.

Great job! I will talk to Silver Wolf and one of us will contact you about your prize.

Okay, so those were the winners, but there were a few other entries that we would like to feature (read the caption for a response on the drawing).

Thank you to everyone who entered! My apologizes to everyone who couldn’t participate or didn’t win. Everyone’s art was amazing! Also, thank you for all the birthday wishes! The ATP’s bday as well as my own. You guys really made the event special. ❤

So, in celebration of these events, we are hosting… you guessed it… an art contest! Rules are below.

  1. The contest starts now and will end on January 13th (SD’s birthday btw 😉 ). -It will now end Monday, January 18th-
  2. All entries must have a Poptropica, Adventure Time, or ATP related theme. Bonus points for incorporating the ATP’s birthday, Christmas, New Years, or some other recent holiday in your artwork.
  3. Please send all entries to the ATP’s email, or submit your work on Deviant Art and tag SydVC (Spotted Dragon). We will also be keeping a look out on the We Love Poptropica dA group as best we can. If you submit your entry any other way, please try to contact us because we may not see it.
  4. Everyone’s art will be shown in a post, but the winner will receive artwork of the entire ATP team with the winner, made by Spotted Dragon. 2nd and 3rd place will receive an icon of their Poptropican made by Silver Wolf. Details will be discussed through the winners’ emails.

Yep, the title says it all… Arabian Nights Episode 3: Careful What You Wish For is now available for everyone to play!

Out Now: Realms, GHD Extras, & Pop Art

As usual, lots of poping news to catch up on! First up, Poptropica Realms is now out for members!

We will provide more info after we’ve checked it out. 😉

Also, the official Galactic Hot Dogs Island Trailer is now out! We previously only had the teaser to look at.

The island will be popping up on the map for members on January 29 and on February 19 for nonmembers. However, the Creators to want to mention that these dates may change.

Besides the new trailer, GHD has a new paper craft as well! It is the Neon Wiener spaceship paper craft.

ghd papercraft

You can find and print out your own on the island’s Tour Page, or in the Poptropica Store.

In other news, the Creators’ Blog has been a little modified. Not much, but it now matches Poptropica’s updated look.

Talking about new designs, HP recently discovered some more behind the scenes artwork from one of Poptropica’s graphic designers. Specifically, Chris Goodwin’s portfolio. His Poptropica related sections include Scene Illustration, Character Design, and Concept Art. Of course, we’ve also mentioned Nate Greenwall’s portfolio before too. 🙂

Lastly, I would like to give a shout-out to Pixel (Nice Dragon), who completed Early Poptropica Island 1000 times! Now that’s impressive! 😀

Shrink Ray Guide & PAw Tribute

shrink ray

Hey guys! I had some spare time on my hands and managed to make a Shrink Ray Island guide! It was one of the few islands we didn’t have I guide for yet. For other guides, click here. If you notice that we don’t have a guide, feel free to write one for us! Just send it to the ATP’s email and be sure to include pictures. 😉

Also, remember how Poptropica creator Dr. Lange created a tribute for the PHB? Well she also made a tribute for Poptropican Awesomeness! It’s pretty awesome.

Maybe Dr. Lange will create a tribute for the ATP? I really hope so! Spread the word! 😛

Happy Holidays! Realms, Selfies, Comics, & More

Happy holidays from the ATP! It’s been an awesome year and you guys just make it better! 😀

Of course, the Creators want to give us a happy holiday too!

happy holidays

Hehehe, I love the GHD ship in the background.

Dr. Lange also felt the need to make a tribute to the PHB. It’s pretty impressive, so you might want to check it out!

Anyway, we also have some behind the scenes images to share. First up, “a paused project….

bts comic

Well, it looks like a comic to promote an island, such as the Virus Hunter: Pandemic Panic series. For what island, I’m not sure.

Next up, a sneak peek that seems to be for the Poptropica Comic Island.

poptropica realmsThe red lines seem to be the platforms that we can walk on.

The Creators also shared this Poptropica Realms sneak peek (on the right).

“Just grabbed from a Poptropica Creator’s computer when she snuck out to do some shopping.”

I personally can’t wait for Poptropica Realms! 😛

Lastly, The Creators wanted to share six Poptropica selfies of 2014.

Cute. 😛 That’s it for now! Happy holidays everyone!

Stubb’s Art, PopStorm, & GHD Sneak Peek

Hey Poptropicans! Just a few Twitter updates to cover. 😛

First up! Do you remember Stubb, from SOS Island? She was found in the Boiler Room and was a very hard worker. Well, a Poptropica Illustrator created some back story for her! In the form of a picture of course.

sos backstory art

Along with that, the fifth Pop Storm is out! This one is entitled Menacing Mouths.

pop storm 5

Interesting… Anyway, the next tweet refers to Galactic Hotdogs. However, it’s not the usual GHD update… In fact, the Creators claim that it is “VERY, VERY behind the scenes.”

ghd

Do we have a new island upon us??? Hmmm??? Plus, it links to the video below.

Yeah, I’m kinda getting a new island vibe. Especially since the Creators mentioned that GHD may become an island in the future.

There is another behind the scenes image on Twitter, but this doesn’t reveal much. It shows “tools being built for more refined character animations in Poptropica’s videos.”

pop animation bts

Hey, still pretty cool. 😉

I also want to mention that the Creators have been sharing a lot of Poptropica related Instagram posts lately, along with Poptropica-In-School moments, Poptropica related Tumbr posts, and more. We probably won’t be updating you guys on all of those, but you can always go to Twitter to see them.

The Grand Tour, Popping in 3D, & Art Everywhere!

Yep, the updates just keep on coming!

The Public Land Preview may be over, but the hype isn’t! A tour of Zany Crown’s Tree House, the winner of the Land competition, has been released. It was made by Captain Crawfish himself. 🙂

Pretty cool, huh? I defiantly think the basement with the tree roots was the best part of the Land. It was super creative, so congrats Zany!

Plus, Poptropica Forgotten Islands is now out for Nintendo 3DS. You can buy it now at Amazon.

Just in time for the holidays!

Of course, there has been more art released on Twitter. Click to enlarge the images.

Sorry if it’s a bit difficult to see. This was Jeff Kinney’s rough castle sketch for Vampire’s Curse.

sneak peek island

undergroundNow this is a sneak peek of an upcoming island’s “palace interior scene.” Apparently the island will be coming in January 2015, so it’s not too far away. Any theories guys? I may be way off, but the image kinda reminds me of the underground Daily Pops we were focused on a while ago, throughout 2013. Some people even thought they could be for the return of Legendary Swords. A good example of those Daily Pops can be found here (or look to the right). The images seem to have a similar style, right? Then again, at a second glace, the old Daily Pops remind me of Arabian Nights too. Well, hopefully you guys have some better theories than I do. 😛

popstorm 4

Anyway, a Creator also drew another Pop Storm! This one demonstrates the Squash and Stretch theme.

That’s all for now! Comment your thoughts below. 😉

Creatures, Worlds, Comics, & Holidays!

Hey Poptropicans! Quick update with some recent tweets.

First off, the Creators released another piece of Monster Carnival concept art.

monster carnival concept art 2

I think my favorite is the bottom left. 😛

The Creators also gave us a sneak peek of an upcoming Land feature. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but we will create… A WHOLE NEW WORLD!!! XD

land sneak peek

I don’t know about you guys, but this looks amazing to me. Anyone getting a “Spore” vibe? Anyway, this is apparently a “prototype of player’s world management screen for Poptropica Land.” 😀

In other news, we have a Poptropica Comic sneak peek to share!

comic sneak peek

Hehehe… XD

Before I go… Happy Veterans Day! You may not celebrate the occasion, but it’s still good to just say thank you for those who have protected you. On that note, Poptropica just can’t wait for Thanksgiving!

Hmm… Now I’m craving turkey and corn on the cob… 😛

New Sites, Best Lands, Poptropolis History, Interviews, Raffle, & More!

Lots. Of. Updates. First off, have you ever heard of Jet Punk? It’s a site where you can make and take quizzes on your favorite topics. Be sure to search ‘Poptropica‘ and ‘Adventure Time‘ to test your knowledge! A very popular Poptropica themed quiz is where you name all the islands. Can you beat my score of 3:11? The higher your time, the better your score, since the timer goes down. Of course our own author, Brave Sky got 3:12… 😛

Also, Poptropica now has a Tumblr! Not much is going on over there yet, but still be sure to check it out! 😉

Of course, there has been a lot going on on Twitter. Including… another shout out for the ATP!

iheartfanart

Looks like the Creators really like your fan art guys! Be sure to send more art to us, at our email. To see more awesome fan art, click here. The image that the Creators decided to feature in their shout out was “I Heart Poptropica” by HPuterpop. 🙂

Other than the shout out, here is all the other stuff going on on Twitter.

There is a new Big Hero 6 ad (where you can earn a helpful follower and now in theaters), a rejected Black Flags Common Room idea, how to draw a planet from Galactic Hotdogs, early concept art for Monster Carnival Island, and another Popstorm. Too bad some of those Monster Carnival characters didn’t make it, they were awesome! Nothing else to say, really.

Although, there is also a new  Diary of a Wimpy Kid ad, for the upcoming “Long Haul” book. Will this turn into an island?

Now, even though the Lands Public Preview is over, that doesn’t been all the fuss is over just yet! You have seen the best of the best lands in all the categories… but who will be the best of the best of the best? Find out by voting for your favorite on the Creators Blog! Polls are up until Monday and right now, Zany Crown is in the lead.

Anyway, are you up for a history lesson? Wait, wait! Before you leave, just hear us out. It can be pretty cool to look into Poptropica’s past… or should I say Poptropolis? Take a look at these very early sketches of what could have been Poptropica today!

“What could have been! Way back in 2006, when we first started discussing Poptropica, I put together some mock-ups for what the site could look like. We envisioned an enormous map of single-scene rooms, and missions that you could go on every day. Some of this has come true, but a lot has changed! This was before we had the idea of islands or even the name Poptropica. Did you know Poptropica was originally going to be called Poptropolis? If a competitor didn’t come up with a similar-sounding name, we never would’ve had the islands of Poptropica… the building block of the whole virtual world.”

See? Not terribly boring at all! XD But who could this mysterious competitor be? Brave Tomato, from the PHB, thinks that it could have been Nicktropolis, which is now called NickClub. Well, it matches up.

nick

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m happy that Poptropica turned out the way it did. That bright yellow would have been a killer…

So now your interested in history, huh? Well, would a few interviews work for you?

First up, Poptropica comic artist Kory Merrit was interviewed by L’idea Magazine, an online magazine. Among other things, he talked about Poptropica, so here are the main Poptropica questions.

L’IDEA MAGAZINE: You are the illustrator of the comic strip Poptropica. How was this cooperation with Paul Gilligan started?
KORY MERRITT: Poptropica is an online game. I’ve never played it, but knew of it due to it being popular with my elementary students. The Poptropica creators (author Jeff Kinney, author/editor Jess Brallier, etc.) had plans to bring Poptropica to other media. From what I understand, they were in touch with Universal editor John Glynn, who had seen my illustrations and recommended me. The Poptropica creators were actually already familiar with my stuff, since I have a story on Poptropica’s sister site, FunBrain. So after a trial stage in summer 2013, they officially picked me as the illustrator for the comic strip and the graphic novel. Paul was selected as the writer of the comic strip. He’s a cool guy, and I think his “Pooch Café” is one of the best modern newspaper comics.

One of the Popotropica strips.

L’IDEA MAGAZINE: What is Poptropica about? (Please talk about content, characters, type of humor, etc…)
KORY MERRITT: As I said, it’s based on the online game. The main characters in the comic series are Oliver, his sister Mya, and a goofy kid named Jorge. Only Oliver and Jorge appear in the strip, but they all share the spotlight in the upcoming graphic novel. They end up in a world composed of strange islands, each with its own theme. I like the constantly-changing settings – one week I’m drawing werewolves, the next they’re on the moon.
I haven’t worked on the comic strip for a while. It was originally supposed to last only 26 weeks, which Paul and I finished last spring, but I just heard last week that they are planning to order another 26 weeks in 2015, so it will continue into next year at least.

Poptropica-21_jpg_cf

L’IDEA MAGAZINE: You are illustrating a graphic novel for a famous author. Are you still keeping the details secret or are we ready for the revelation of this mysterious author?
KORY MERRITT: Ah, that’s the Poptropica stuff. The famous author is Jeff Kinney, the Wimpy Kid himself – I think I’ve dropped that name a few times already. He created Poptropica and the characters from the Poptropica comics, along with author/editor Jess Brallier and some others. I’m presently drawing and coloring a 105-page graphic novel based on the Poptropica comic characters. It’s an original story from Jeff and Jess, and the script was written by Max Brallier, who has another illustrated series in the works. They’re really cool people. I’m lucky to be on board. I nearly geeked-out the first time I heard from Jeff, but luckily managed to keep it together (or at least that’s how I remember it).

If you noticed, this interview confirms the Poptropica graphic novel, coming in 2015. To read the entire interview, click here.

The same online magazine interviewed Paul Gilligan, Poptropica’s Comic Writer. Again, here are the Poptropica highlights.

L’IDEA MAGAZINE: In June of this year you debuted with another comic strip, Poptropica. Could you tell us how it came about and what is the storyline?
PAUL GILLIGAN: Poptropica is a popular website where players can create avatars and travel through a plethora of interesting islands.  The website’s creator, Jeff Kinney (of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” fame) wanted a comic strip to go with it, and so he hired me to do the writing.  There were pre-existing templates for the two main characters of Oliver and Jorge.  I fleshed them out and gave them the motivation that they’re searching for a way out of Poptropica by traveling from island to island, kinda like that show “Quantum Leap”, like each time they hop to the next island it will be the one that leads them home.

A Poptropica strip

L’IDEA MAGAZINE: In Poptropica you share the credits with Kory Merritt. How do you operate in the creation of the strip with him?
PAUL GILLIGAN: I do the writing, accompanied by thumbnails if necessary, and Kory pencils out the strips and runs them by me.  I bring up any alterations that might be necessary for clarity, etc, and then he inks and colors the work.  It’s been a fairly seamless collaboration thus far; Kory’s a great artist and super easy to work with.

Nothing was really given away, but it’s still interesting to read. To read the entire interview, click here.
